Part 1 basically summed up how the way things are in high school is different than how it is in the broadcasting world. A key thing I remember is him talking about how in the media a boring story can be interesting. I think this is true because if your teacher described the sequence of events, it will most likely not be as good as if it was described in a film. Part 1 also talked about how you can make the boring elements interesting. The example he gave is of a house being quiet. But instead of the house being quiet, just make the audience suspicious of why the house is quiet. The last aspect I caught was that you need to give the audience a reason they are watching it. You could have the best anecdote but then it means nothing. You need a sequence of action/story that works and a moment of reflection that works.
Part 2 was about how hard it is to find a decent story. The amount of time to find a decent story is more than the time of production. He described how more than half a week is just looking for stories from the news. He also talked about how things can happen that mess up the story but if you have good footage you have to kill it. You have to take the trash out and make gold. He also goes through a lot of crap before you find something good.
Part 4 was about just being your own self. But also, be aware that you or someone else might have a horrible personality where they talk everything about themselves instead of looking for other personalities. You want to have yourself in there but make sure other people's personalities can be shown through the media.
For my part 3 reflection when I'm in that situation or phase I try to just stop and come back no matter how long the pause (unless I have a reason to do it that instant) until I can find that spark again. I try to do as much as I can but most of the time, I have an image in my head and I meet a learning curve in getting my idea out. This class has kind of helped me just shut up and go make media and realize I will get better as I go.
